PHPA Local 102 annually awards college scholarships to deserving individuals who want to further their academic endeavors. This year we plan to award six $1,000 scholarships. Applications for the 2011-2012 school year may be submitted from 17 DEC 2010 - 31 MAR 2011. All awardees will be determined by the Scholarship Committee. The following criteria must be met in order to apply for and receive a scholarship:
Application Guidelines and Rules
- The applicant must be one of the following:
- Son or daughter, stepson or stepdaughter, or foster son or daughter of a Local 102 union member in good standing pursuing an undergraduate degree. (Important: See notes pertaining to Categories 1 and 2 below)
- A Local 102 union member in good standing pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.
- Spouse of a Local 102 union member in good standing pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.
- The sponsor or applicant (union member) must be in good standing with Local 102 for at least one year prior to the scholarship award and not be paying agency administrative fees only.
- The scholarship award amount will be awarded directly to the college or university in the applicant's name. Therefore, the applicant must already be accepted to or enrolled in (as applicable) the college or university listed on their application and their social security number must be provided.
- The college or university listed on the application must be an accredited United States two or four year private or public institution.
- The winning applicant agrees to attend the college or university full time during the school year the scholarship is awarded for.
- If any information provided by the applicant is found to be fraudulent and a scholarship has been awarded, or if the applicant does not attend school during the year for which the scholarship was awarded, the following will occur:
- The Local 102 union member will be fined an amount established by the union Executive Board (within guidelines set in the union by-laws) that properly compensates the union and its membership.
- The applicant will be barred from any future union scholarship awards.
Categories Listed in Priority for Award Selections
- Cat 1 - High School Senior (S/D, SS/SD, FS/FD) (See Notes 1 and 2 below)
- Cat 2 - Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior in College/University (S/D, SS/SD, FS/FD) (See Notes 1 and 2 below)
- Cat 3 - Member Local 102, undergraduate or graduate degree College/University
- Cat 4 - Spouse Local 102, undergraduate or graduate degree College/ University
Note #1: Category 1 and Category 2 applicants planning to attend a Service Academy for the scholarship year are no longer eligible for the award of a scholarship.
Note #2: The definition of a dependent child has been changed to mirror the definition found in our health care plan. To wit: an unmarried child aged 25 or less, not working full time, chiefly depending on the union member for support, and will be a full time student at a state accredited school. This child may be: (a) a natural child, (b) a stepchild residing in your home, (c) a legally adopted child, or (d) a foster child.
